about

Artist's Statement:

I wrote these songs at the beginning of a phase of my life that is defined by boxes. All the moving in and out of dorm rooms, the going back and forth to home and school for breaks, the moving in and out of places for summer jobs is a stark contrast to the unmoving existence I led before. I lived in one house; I went to one school. Coming from such a privileged, stable lifestyle to the all-over-the-place of being a young adult makes the tumult of move-in and move-out day stressful and exciting. I had never had to think of my possessions so spatially before, let alone their fragility or weight. And the archetype of this new way of considering my things, the symbol of such delineation, is the cardboard box. Mass produced, cheap, sometimes with titles of liquors I’ll never try, sometimes with others’ initials and rumpled edges, sometimes perfect and new with ‘UPS’ emblazoned on the sides – but yet really only ever existing as a defined space. Not an object in itself, but a what-you-can-put-inside.

I have no specific memories of writing these songs. I remember my freshman dorm room, where I did most of that writing, and I have a vague recollection of how I felt then. Even that room was littered with boxes, as I, for some reason, collected Cap'n Crunch boxes and boxes received in the mail to form a giant, robot like being. But mostly what I remember is writing lyrics. Not thinking, just writing. I would only realize them to mean anything after they existed. Even in instances that seem obvious, I would only realize their meaning when playing through them, or recording them, or working with everyone on the record. Then, still later, even these meanings changed. I reinterpreted my own songs so many times they didn't feel like mine anymore, like doing covers of my own material. This, though off-putting, was also exciting. I could interpret my songs however I wanted. They could be literal, they could be metaphorical. About anyone and no one all at once.

These songs, then, are boxes. I’ve shuffled them around, filled and refilled them so many times that their original purpose is only really a vague impression. A liquor store label, faded shipping instructions. There are parts I would never even imagine writing now. There are interpretations of events I don’t even really agree with anymore. Yet here they are, more what-you-can-put-insides, with all of their strange vestigial parts and crumpled edges. I hope you can find something inside of them that you like, or put something into them of your own that you need to store. At the very least, I hope you can admire the amount of work (and patience!) everyone who helped on this record put into it. If not, that’s okay. Boxes aren’t always needed. They can be piled in recycling bins, or crafted into robots, or folded up and put back for others to find.
